Description: The intent of the 2016 streams layer is to display all named streams in Illinois and all other streams which have been sampled by the Illinois EPA. The 2016 streams layer is based primarily on the 2014 High Resolution (1:24,000 scale) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Flowline segments. It contains those line segments in the NHD that are within the boundaries of Illinois and which have a GNIS_ID and GNIS_Name. It also, contains some line segments outside the boundary of Illinois, where those were deemed necessary or informative for streams within Illinois. The 2016 streams layer contains additional NHD line segments for lakes which connect to streams and for streams which are identified with a name on the USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps, but did not contain a GNIS_Name. Some non-NHD hand-digitized line segments are also included where the NHD flowline segments did not accurately delineate a particular stream segment. Where discrepancies existed between the USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps and the NHD regarding the location of a particular stream, most often, the USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps were used as the authority for determining the location of the stream.
